About Us

The Carolyn Mawby Chorale was founded in 1987 by sixteen alumni of the University of Michigan - Flint Chamber Singers. As undergraduates, they sang under the direction of Carolyn Mawby. Upon graduation, these enthusiastic singers wanted to continue their singing experience as they pursued their careers. In 1994, the Chorale opened its membership to non-alumni, grew rapidly and established its own concert schedule. The membership now includes over 50 singers.

In its brief history, the Carolyn Mawby Chorale has performed for the American Choral Directors Association and Michigan Educators Conventions on several occasions. In the summer of 2002, the group performed at the Interlochen National Music Camp Summer concert season in Corson Auditorium.

The Chorale sings a varied repertoire of music from Renaissance through twentieth century. Their annual Christmas Concert has become one of the most popular musical events of the Greater Flint Area concert season. With the generous patronage of Mr. William H. Piper, the Chorale sponsors a Festival of Flint Choirs each Spring, featuring area college, high school and church choirs, with nationally known guest conductors.

In the year 2000, the Carolyn Mawby Chorale began a five year collaboration with pianist Kevin Cole. The series began with A Tribute to George Gershwin continuing in successive years with A Tribute to Irving Berlin, A Tribute to Richard Rodgers, and two concerts featuring The Great American Songbook.
